The early signals of metabolic drift

30 May 2026 · 5 min read · Dr. Shaima Alshareef

Metabolic problems rarely announce themselves. They accumulate quietly, often for years before a diagnosis.

By the time a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is made, the underlying process has usually been developing for a long time. Prevention lives in that earlier window — the period where changes are still quiet, and still very responsive.

Signals worth attention

  • A slowly rising waist measurement, even at a stable weight.
  • Blood pressure creeping toward the upper end of normal.
  • Triglycerides rising while HDL cholesterol falls.
  • Fasting glucose drifting upward year to year, still 'within range'.

Reviewed together and over time, these tell a clearer story than any single value on a single day. That trend-reading is the core skill of preventive practice.
